PORTMAN HOUSE | JIAN YE LI PROJECT GAINING NOTICE IN SHANGHAI AND BEYOND
18,000 Square Meter Project Preserves and Re-Creates Historic Neighborhood
ATLANTA, GA – May, 2010 - John Portman & Associates, Inc. (Portman) is pleased to see the firm’s Portman House | Jian Ye Li project receiving
recognition in the media. For instance, a recent article in China Daily details the transformation of this historic Shikumen neighborhood into an exciting international
destination featuring appealing residential, retail and restaurant spaces. The article reflects the civic pride that Shanghai has in the
architect’s work to preserve the Shikumen style houses.
The neighborhood was originally designed by a French architect and built in the former French concession of Shanghai as residences for middle
to low income families who worked for the Jian Ye Li Construction Company. In 1994, Jian Ye Li was declared a protected heritage site by the
Shanghai Municipality. In December 2008, Portman broke ground on the restoration project. As the article suggests, the benefit of marrying
the charm of the original Jian Ye Li Shikumen style with the finest in 21st century living conveniences is becoming even more apparent to
observers as the project progresses. The complex is slated to open in December 2010.
