Work on the concept will begin immediately. It is expected that Phase I will begin construction in 2007, working toward an opening date in 2010.
Established in the 1980's, the Hongqiao Economic and Technological Development zone was the first Technological Development Zone in Shanghai to focus on foreign trade. The Zone was recently expanded from its original size of .25 square miles (.65 km2) to 1.22 square miles (3.15 km2) with the intent to increase the Zones service functions. With more than 3,000 domestic and foreign enterprises, as well as 50% of all foreign consulates and foreign residents in Shanghai living and working in the surrounding Hongqiao area, the vision for the Zone is to become an international sub-center business district of Shanghai (SCBD) that will serve Shanghai, the Yangtze River Delta and the Asia Pacific Region. Recognized for an appealing balance of international business and trade buildings with green open spaces, the Zone plans to continue its transformation into a garden urban area of Shanghai and the national model urban area for environmental protection. The Jin Hongqiao Project will be the first mixed-used project in the expansion area.
