As the first building of a new college campus, this structure was designed to establish a new benchmark for learning for the University System of Georgia. Portman was challenged to create an environment for thinking outside the box. This buildings dynamic form becomes a symbolic expression as the axis of this new campus.

The integrated, technologically enhanced learning center contains all of the critical functions necessary for students, faculty, and staff to accomplish their daily agendas within a single, open environment. Classrooms, laboratories, and offices form the outer ring, while the information, library, and research areas are contained within the core. An open, three-story ring separates these two elements while providing a variety of formal and informal study areas for interactive learning. In addition, support functions for food and drink, electronic banking, and student services are conveniently located along this central space.
